As the succeeding model to the legendary RK8 R260 chassis, the Hino RK 280 brings significant upgrades. This fleet is equipped with a J08E-WD engine and has adopted a common-rail system, controlled by a computerized ECU (Electronic Control Unit). This chassis has an engine displacement of 7,684 cc. Although it shares similarities with the previous generation, the integration of the ECU system has resulted in an impressive performance boost. Engine power has increased from 260 PS to 280 PS (276.1 TK). Most notably, torque has risen from 745 Nm to 823 Nm. With these figures, buses equipped with this chassis have ample power reserves to conquer various road conditions.
The route from Bandung to Cikijing is known for its uphill and winding roads. The 823 Nm of torque ensures that the bus won’t lack power or feel sluggish when navigating long inclines. Acceleration is more responsive, allowing the bus to travel smoothly and provide a sense of safety for passengers throughout the journey.
The high engine performance of the Hino RK 280 is also complemented by other advanced technologies that provide extra safety and comfort inside the cabin. One such feature is the bus’s braking system, which is equipped with ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System). Additionally, this chassis is integrated with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) technologies, resulting in a more complete combustion process. As a result, the engine runs more smoothly, with minimal vibration, and the exhaust emissions are significantly cleaner.
In terms of the undercarriage, this chassis retains the ladder frame configuration with Hino’s signature leaf spring suspension, which has been proven for its durability. This configuration is designed to absorb shocks on uphill and winding roads, ensuring the bus doesn’t sway when navigating sharp turns. This minimizes the risk of motion sickness for passengers.
